Epicanthoplasty

Epicanthoplast

Surgery Features

♦What is Epicanthoplasty?(epicanthoplasty)

It is a piece of skin located between the inner corners of the eyes and the nose, which is also known as the “epicanthal fold”. If the medial canthus skin is too thick, it may cover a part of the eye, resulting in excessively small or round eyes.

♦Common Types of Epicanthal Fold

♦Features

1. Improve the upper eyelid levator, forming bright and spirited eyes.

2. Enlarge and widen the eyes.

3. Enhance the double eyelid lines.

4. Narrow the distance between the eyes, modify the flat radix, creating the visual effect of a nose augmentation.

5. It can be performed with double eyelid surgery.

Surgical Approach

Epicanthoplasty has a long history. The surgical procedure has also gone through continuous improvement. Z or Y-V shaped incision or scarless medial canthus procedures commonly involve making an incision on the redundant upper eyelid tissue and suturing the incision to expose as much tear duct as possible, thereby eliminating the epicanthal fold. It can effectively widen the eye and modify a flat radix. The scar after surgery will temporary stay on the skin of the inner corner of the eye. It usually takes 3-6 months to sustain a gradual recovery and for the scar to slowly disappear.

Precautions

1.In epicanthoplasty, the incision should not be too big or concentrated in the medial canthus. By loosening the epicanthal fold, good results can be achieved.

2.Do not remove excessive skin, because the medial canthus skin with excessive scarring will cause scar formation due to the tension of the suture.

3.Due to Asians’ physical constitution and despite the continual surgical improvement and the name “scarless epicanthoplasty”, a scar is generally left, requiring makeup to cover the scar. The purpose of this procedure is to create brighter and more spirited eyes.

4.Avoid bending over to shampoo hair after surgery, bowing for prolong periods of time, and laborious work. Elevate the pillow during sleep to facilitate circulation.

5.Refrain from tobacco, spirits, tea, coffee, chilies, herbal medicine (such as Granoderma lucidum), and other blood-activating and irritating foods.

6.儘量避免使用眼力過度(例如長時間看電腦、看電視、看書等),或搓揉雙眼,避免不必要的眼部壓力影響傷口癒合。

7.Massage the scar after about two weeks. During massage, press from the medial canthus to the tip of the eye with the finger pulp more than four times a day and for 2-5 minutes each time. Massage at fixed points. Massage may be more painful at first, and obvious bumps and hardening can be felt when pressed, but they will soften in time. Continuous massage for 1-3 month’s is recommended.

Q&A

Q:Will I have “cross eyes” after epicanthoplasty?

A:No, you will not. The formation of “ cross eyes“ is caused by the eye ball being too close to the inside when looking inward. The “cross-eyed appearance” can actually be improved by enlarging the medial canthus.

Q:When can I start applying make up to conceal the scar in the medial canthus?

A:After two weeks.

Q:How should scar care be done?

A:Apply cosmetic tape for one to two months after suture removal. Apply ointment after two months to lighten the color of the scar. Some people’s scar will bulge. In that case, scar elimination injections may be needed to slightly smooth the scar.

Q:Is it necessary to undergo epicanthoplasty and double eyelid surgery at the same time?

A:It is so for most people. However, some choose to undergo surgery after double eyelid surgery; others undergo epicanthoplasty alone.
